True Self-Expression
Looking over our daily newspapers, the writer has often noted articles on the subject of modern education. Undoubtedly, some of these new ideas are helpful to both parents and children in regard to the preparation of the latter's school work, and it is encouraging to see progress made in any line of human activity.
One phase of this subject which has seemed somewhat disturbing, however, is discussion given to the development of so-called self-expression in a child. Realizing that the freedom of thought, speech, and action which this system aims to inculcate might very easily result in insubordination, unless each individual case were handled wisely, thought has often been filled with gratitude that Christian Scientists who are parents need never become confused over the issue. They have within the Bible and their textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, definite and complete instructions how to solve every problem. The Bible repeatedly proclaims the oneness of God. Our deduction, therefore, must be that there is only one Mind to be expressed, namely, God, and that true self-expression consists of manifesting His qualities by reflection.
This conclusion having been reached, the question naturally presents itself, How may this most desirable result be attained by us and by our children? The answer is that true self-expression is gained only as we ourselves are obedient to divine Principle and foster this same obedience in our children. Have we any doubt on the subject of obedience to parents? Do we accept the belief that obedience to right authority is not to be expected from children? If so, let us hasten to learn that there is no foundation for this belief either in the Bible or in Mrs. Eddy's writings, while there is much pointed advice to the contrary.
