Thankfulness

He came to Bethany to wake his friend;
Deep gloom was there. Had Lazarus not died
Four days before? What then could Jesus do?
Ah, yes! they knew that he had raised the dead
At Nain, and also in Capernaum,
But Lazarus had been entombed four days!
What else was there to do save mourn for him?
So poignant was their grief; and "Jesus wept."

'Twas tender love, not grief, evoked those tears.
The Master came to prove God's law supreme;
He therefore voiced his selfless prayer of thanks,
Then called him forth whom all had mourned as dead.
Oh, great indeed the lesson of that hour!
Not death, but life is God's eternal law;
And he who would Life's bounteous gifts receive,
Must learn, through selfless love, true thankfulness.
