Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung

The article "Berlin Sects and Free Churches," in your paper, refers to Christian Science in a manner which is appreciated. There are, however, a few items which I should like to correct.

It is said in the article that "Mary Baker Eddy and her adherents have up to now failed to prove that the laws of matter are to be overcome by faith in Mind." Certain of the testimonies of healing which are published in the Christian Science periodicals, only after being carefully verified, prove that sicknesses which have not been cured through medical means have been healed in Christian Science. This fact shows that spiritual law is superior to so-called material law, and annuls it. Even if it be only a toothache that is healed in Christian Science, this healing can be brought about only as it becomes clear what the nature of spiritual law is, and that it is superior to material law.

Although interest in physical healing may chiefly attract the visitor to the Wednesday evening testimony meetings, on account of the testimonies given there, physical healing is but the effect of one's understanding of God, good. Mrs. Eddy says (Rudimental Divine Science, p. 2): "Healing physical sickness is the smallest part of Christian Science. It is only the bugle-call to thought and action, in the higher range of infinite goodness. The emphatic purpose of Christian Science is the healing of sin."
