True Charity

I would improve my stock of love, that I
Might break the bread of Life with those who need;
And I would give a cup of water cold
To parched lips, in Christ's name, as we read.
And I would say with confidence to him
Who, lame and poor, doth ask an alms of me:
Of the world's gold and silver have I none,
But such as I have, give I unto thee.
Rise up, thou child of God, arise and walk!
Now! In the name of Jesus Christ I speak.
And he would rise and enter in the gate,
His feet and ankle bones no longer weak;
His hungering heart so filled with gratitude,
His thirsting thought so quenched with drafts of love,
Not needing now the alms, he praises God,
Who sendeth down all good gifts from above.
