Place

Job asked, "Where is the place of understanding?" Christian Science replies that it is in infinite Spirit, and that man in God's likeness is an inhabitant of Mind, not matter. This conclusion, firmly held to, rules out fear, anxiety, and helps toward the solution of finding one's human home; for no image of divine Love is a homeless wanderer. Each offspring of divine Mind has his own identity and qualifications for success. For aimless drifting Christian Science therefore offers anchorage in Soul.

It is impossible to understand the question of place metaphysically without taking as a base Mrs. Eddy's statement in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 282) that "matter has no place in Spirit, and Spirit has no place in matter." In the processes of human thinking, matter appears to usurp the place of Spirit. Which shall give way to the other? Spirit cannot give ground, for it fills all space; and in reality there are not two factors to be reckoned with, but one—God's omnipresence. Therefore, through the application of Christian Science, the mortal belief in the presence of matter must give way to the understanding of the infinite substance and harmony of Mind, Spirit.

"The place of understanding" is a state of conscious spiritual harmony. Wherever Christian Science has brought about purification of thought and some healing manifestation, there the individual so blessed has taken his first step into the holy place of spiritual understanding. A change of environment may therefore not be of first importance, since mental regeneration is the essential factor in every case of healing. Nothing can alter the fact that infinite Mind fills all space. Hence, in loyalty to this basic fact of being, the Christian Scientist sets himself to obey the divine mandate that "in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering."
