[Written Especially for Young People]

A Term of School

There was once a girl who was very much disappointed because she could not continue her studies. She keenly felt the need of further education. The near-by university looked alluring, but she could not go to it. It was necessary for her to take a position which would bring in an income that would help the family budget.

As the time for the opening of the fall term approached, there came an increased yearning for further study. She must not stand still; but her new position demanded all of her time during the day, and so she considered evening school and correspondence courses. One day as she was going over the question very earnestly and realizing that "desire is prayer," as Mrs. Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 1), the thought came clearly to her: Why, I have not yet studied systematically the greatest subject of all—Christian Science! There is the Reading Room for a classroom, where I can be free from interruptions; and I already have my textbooks!

With great joy this girl eagerly accepted the thought. She confided in her mother, but no one else was to know of her plan. She decided to pursue her studies three evenings a week, from seven to nine o'clock, and she joyously anticipated having dinner promptly and then going off to school! No matter what the weather was, or what counterattraction came along, she let nothing stand in the way of her being at the Reading Room promptly at seven o'clock and pursuing her study for two hours.
