I did not become interested in Christian Science because...
I did not become interested in Christian Science because of any physical need. I had been a member of a Protestant church for many years, but felt that I was not receiving the spiritual food necessary. It was in 1913, after attending several Christian Science services, that I purchased the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and became really interested. After reading the chapter on Prayer I became convinced that here, at last, was the truth. During the years that followed, many minor demonstrations were made, all of great importance in my spiritual development.
In 1924 a demonstration was made that I wish to recount, hoping that it will strengthen the understanding of others who are seeking the truth as found in Christian Science. I had just returned to my hotel after attending a lecture on Christian Science. After going to my room on the ninth floor I found it necessary to return to the office. Just as I was stepping into the elevator something slipped and the car started down out of control. I was half in and half out of the car. Instantly my feet were caught and I was carried five floors, crushed between the elevator and the wall. My feet and legs were broken in twelve places, and an eight-inch abrasion was made in one leg. I was so grateful that my feet were spared me that all of the way to the hospital I sang the Doxology. I suffered no pain after the first twenty-four hours; and in five weeks walked out of the hospital without any support whatever, entered a taxi, and was driven home. This was the day after Christmas. Before Easter I was dancing, and on Easter Monday was back at my work without a limp. The doctors had warned me that I might never again walk without a limp, even if I was able to walk at all. X-ray photographs showed that in less than two weeks one break was so perfectly healed that no trace of it was left on the film.
At the time of the accident and while I was waiting for an ambulance, a trained nurse insisted that I take a hypodermic and prepared the needle. I refused and told her why. She demanded some proof of the efficacy of Christian Science, saying that she had heard a lot about it and would like to see some proof. She called my attention to the way I was quivering and shaking and declared that no power on earth except a hypodermic injection could stop that shaking, demanding that I stop it through my Christian Science. I made no reply, but before I could even steady my thought enough to declare the truth, the trembling suddenly ceased and every nerve in my body was in complete repose, and from that moment on not a nerve ever even twitched. The nurse said nothing but stared for a moment, then quietly turned away and put up the syringe.
