I did not take up the study of Christian Science for...
I did not take up the study of Christian Science for physical healing, though I have since experienced many. About sixteen years ago, while I was talking with two friends, the subject of religion came up. One remarked that Christian Scientists had the most peculiar religion of all, saying that they did not believe there was a heaven or a hell, and did not believe in prayer. This excited my curiosity; I wondered what they really did believe. A few months previous, when on a visit to my parents, my mother told me that my father was reading Christian Science. I thought this was very foolish. After listening to the remarks made by my friend regarding Christian Science I immediately wrote my parents asking them to send me a copy of the book on Christian Science, not even knowing the name of it.
The chapter on Prayer in this book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was a revelation to me. I had often wondered why my prayers were not answered, and after reading Mrs. Eddy's inspired concept of prayer, I realized that I had never known how to pray. As I went on reading Science and Health I was healed of many things, among them extreme nervousness. Christian Science has been my only consolation in great sorrow. It has helped me to overcome the thought of loneliness.
I am indeed grateful to the practitioners who have helped me along the way. While I am most grateful for the physical healings, I cannot express in words the peace and happiness that come when one understands that God is "a very present help in trouble." That thought in itself takes away the need for worry and anxiety. I shall never cease to give thanks to that noble woman, Mrs. Eddy, who gave this practical religion to the world.
