Gratitude for Little Things

How many of us, in the rush of a busy day, forget to be grateful for the innumerable little things that help to make that day harmonious! Often our thought is so fixed upon some definite thing we wish to see accomplished that we fail to be grateful for the right ideas that come to us, enabling us to achieve that which is right for us to do. Many of us are as one climbing a beautiful hillside with gaze so fixed upon something ahead that he fails to see the lovely blossoms along the path. Our journey would be sweeter and the way brighter were we to recognize the beauty that surrounds us.

How sweet it is to turn our thought to the source of all good and silently breathe, "Thank you, Father," for some loving-kindness that has been done to us—for a smile that lightens the day; a seeming obstruction to the day's harmony overcome, small though it may have seemed to be; a momentary fear allayed—for the many little things that are helping us to see various evidences of perfection being manifested in our lives.

Do we remember to be grateful for the love that we have been able to reflect to others? Are we grateful for the ability to smile—grateful for the spiritual joy of which a happy smile is the outward expression? It is cause for gratitude when we are able to withhold an unkind remark that might have disturbed the peace of our fellow man had it been uttered. We may well be grateful for these things, since their essential goodness comes from divine Love.
