When I commenced the study of Christian Science, it was...
When I commenced the study of Christian Science, it was without a thought of gaining anything, without realizing that the study of Christian Science would bring good to me personally, but solely with the thought of helping my mother, who was in great need of healing, not only of physical ills, but also of a deep sense of grief, caused by the passing on of my father. The sense of grief was lifted during the first visit of a Christian Science practitioner; and I shall never cease to be grateful for the many healings my mother experienced, as we at once dropped all material so called aids, and, looking to God alone to meet our every need, devoted practically all our time to gaining a better understanding of God through the study of Christian Science. The spiritual understanding we gained during the years that followed gave us both a truer sense of health, peace, and happiness; and when, some years later, my mother passed on, "the scientific statement of being," found on page 468 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was so uplifting, comforting, and satisfying that, although I had been her constant companion, all thoughts of death, grief, and separation were eliminated, as I realized that not one of us can ever be separated from God, who is Life, and that always "in him we live, and move, and have our being."
Since that time it has been repeatedly proved to me that "each successive stage of experience unfolds new views of divine goodness and love" (Science and Health, p. 66); for although I had not had any previous business experience but had to rely solely on God for guidance, knowing that the only business there is, is the Father's business, and consistently applying all I have known of God, good, to meet every problem, it has been proved possible successfully to carry on a manufacturing business which has been, and is, the channel of supply, generously meeting the needs of a brother's widow and children and my own needs too.
Thus Christian Science has been proved to be practical; and this business stands to-day, a monument to the efficacy of Christian Science as applied to business. The demonstration has been a blessing to all connected with it, for through the manifold problems which have been met and overcome again and again, it has been realized that "God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 307), and that "every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning." Thus the understanding has been gained of God as our only and inexhaustible source of supply.
