Through the kind thought of a neighbor during a period...
Through the kind thought of a neighbor during a period of illness and discord in my home in my high school days, I began to read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and other authorized Christian Science literature. Some time later, continued interest resulted in my asking for treatment from a practitioner for a fractured jawbone which had caused considerable pain and many sleepless nights. My attention was directed to the passage on page 472 of Science and Health which reads: "All reality is in God and His creation, harmonious and eternal. That which He creates is good, and He makes all that is made." A degree of relief was experienced almost immediately, and that night the first comfortable sleep for about a week proved to me that there must be truth to the statement that Christian Science heals physical ills. After my healing of this condition I turned more earnestly to the study of Christian Science and made some progress in understanding; but after several years I allowed my thought to become much disturbed by doubt and criticism.
At that time I moved from the city in which I had been living to a much larger one, where it was necessary for me to obtain employment. There I was told many times that positions were very scarce and business very dull, particularly at that season of the year. In passing the office of a Christian Science practitioner one morning, after two weeks of daily search for work, I thought I would try Christian Science once more, and in this skeptical state of mind I called on the practitioner. She discerned my difficulty at once. With chagrin I heard her tell me that I needed activity; therefore I must study, and do it every day, faithfully and persistently; that it was not enough merely to read our Lesson-Sermons partially or superficially, but the entire Lesson-Sermon should be carefully studied each day and the effort made to understand and apply all I could of it. She also pointed out the helpfulness of never retiring at night without reading something from the Christian Science periodicals or from the Bible or Mrs. Eddy's writings. She stated that I was entitled to progress and should claim it. This has been of especial help to me. Although I felt rebellious about being told to study more, I was obedient. I went to work within three or four days after this treatment, and in another week secured a permanent position which was much better than some of those which I thought I wanted.
Very gradual but continuous unfoldment has come to me as the result of that treatment, and I am sincerely grateful for the loving but firm practitioner who awakened my desire for growth and progress and for her support in times of need. There have been many proofs of healing in our home; sever burns, colds, and, in some degree, erroneous traits of disposition have been overcome.
