Signs of the Times

[Editorial in the Ellenville Journal, New York]

To me, it seems the possession of wealth is the least part of being rich. The truly rich is he who has soared to the highest thoughts and yet is humble, who has experienced the deepest, purest feelings of which man is capable, and withal has sympathy for his poorest neighbor. "Riches without happiness are idle gain." Riches lie too near the surface. Happiness lies deeper than man has ever yet gotten to know well.

I too should ask to be rich, but the riches I should seek would be those of being, not of having.
