To one who seems to be overcome by material beliefs,...
To one who seems to be overcome by material beliefs, the dawning of a great truth in consciousness brings peace "which passeth all understanding." So it was when a little of this great truth, Christian Science, came to my understanding. I had been interested in Christian Science for years, but was unwilling to let go of a few cherished beliefs; so when I needed help to overcome a dislocated vertebra, headaches, neuralgia, and many other troubles, I sought at first the physicians, then chiropractors, but only grew worse. While I was living in Colorado the conditions were aggravated and I determined to make a desperate effort to get healed by going to California for further treatments. I shall always remember how hard I tried to believe that I was getting better, for the loving chiropractor who treated me had quite won me with her kind sympathy. It was of no use, however, for I grew worse.
Then I was called to the bedside of my sister's husband, who appeared to have passed on. He had been suffering from influenza and had been having Christian Science treatment, as both he and my sister were Christian Scientists. Never for one instant did my sister's faith waver. But to us standing there it seemed hopeless. We stood by his bedside for perhaps thirty minutes, and then slowly and naturally breath came back to him who had seemed beyond recall. The exaltation of that moment will never leave me and a bright ray of the truth entered my consciousness, there to remain, I hope, forever. It was then I glimpsed man's spiritual heritage. I had in those few moments stood in the presence of the Christ.
In an hour my brother-in-law was up and dressed, and he suffered no relapse. Doubting for me was at an end. I sought a Christian Science practitioner, and within three weeks my most trying ailments were healed. Others were slow to yield, but this made me seek more of the truth daily in order to overcome them.
