Jesus' admonition, "Let your light so shine before men,...
Jesus' admonition, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven," was being heeded by a neighbor when I first became acquainted with our Father-Mother God. I was fully convinced that I was soon to be the third of my immediate family to pass on with tuberculosis. I had developed a distressing cough, which had not yielded after six months' treatment from a physician who called it chronic bronchitis but kept warning me about my family history. I was in a very weak condition. I had been vacillating for several weeks between a desire to try Christian Science and a fear of trusting myself to it on account of our two small children, the elder three years old. The fear of death and of leaving my family was intense. One day, when especially fearful, I asked my neighbor if she thought Christian Science could help me. She asked me if I was satisfied that the physician could do nothing more for me. I said I was not sure. Then she told me she was sure that Christian Science could help me, and that many people were healed just by reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which she very lovingly left with me. She saw I was not yet ready to trust God entirely.
While I was still undecided, this neighbor met with an accident. She was cleaning some spots from a carpet when the gasoline exploded, burning her face, hands, and arms badly. Her healing was so marvelous to me that I decided that if Christian Science could do that, it could heal me.
A short time later my cough became very much worse and I asked another friend who was a practitioner for help. After two weeks' treatment I was entirely healed; the dreadful fear was gone, the cough was gone, and I was free. I have never been able fully to express my gratitude for that healing which took place about sixteen years ago. Since that time Christian Science has been our only help in all kinds of problems. In our family of four it has met all our needs when rightly applied.
