I first became interested in Christian Science in 1916
I first became interested in Christian Science in 1916. I attended the lectures and some of the services and read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy; but I did not feel that I could comply with the demands of Christian Science — "even the surrender of all merely material sensation, affection, and worship" (Science and Health, p. 9). So, during the next three years of half-hearted interest I had many bitter experiences, which culminated in the loss of my home and much that was at that time dear to me.
Through the tender encouragement of relatives and friends I then decided to rely absolutely on God, as revealed in Christian Science; and although there have been many dark days, I have been so conscious of divine guidance that all bitterness has been removed and replaced by that peace "which passeth all understanding."
Pride and fear of criticism have been overcome to a very large extent through my acceptance of the bountifulness of God, as expressed through His children. In this letting go of pride and self-pity, and in the fuller consciousness of the one atmosphere of divine Love, I was healed of an acute form of nasal catarrh, from which a doctor told me I should always suffer while I remained in Sheffield. I am now working happily there, although employed in one of the smokiest parts of the city. Eczema was also healed, with the help of a practitioner, when I obeyed the demand for further purification of my thinking by a more consecrated study of Christian Science.
