When my attention was first called to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"...
When my attention was first called to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy I read these words on page vii of the Preface: "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." This sounded different from anything I had ever read. I was suffering from a nervous collapse, caused as I then thought by floods and financial losses. My father was a Congregational minister, and we had family prayers every morning as regularly as we ate breakfast. I began reading the Bible through when I was eight years old. But with all our study and prayers some of us were continually sick. After reading Science and Health I was healed of false theological beliefs, and then nervous sick headaches, rheumatism, heart trouble, blood poisoning, as well as impatience and anxiety, were also healed.
Later, when my little grandchild was left with me for a few days, she was taken with spinal meningitis. All night my prayer was in the words of Mrs. Eddy's poem commencing, "O gentle presence, peace and joy and power" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 389; Poems, p. 4). I thought that if she were not well by morning I would call someone more experienced; but she awoke well, and said, "All night I kept saying, 'O gentle presence, peace and joy and power.' "
When we begin to understand the difference in meaning between the first and second accounts of creation in Genesis, our fear of sin, sickness, and death is lessened, our thought lifted above the belief of a material man, and we begin to know more of the man created in the image and likeness of God.
