Christian Science was brought to my attention many...
Christian Science was brought to my attention many times before I wanted it, or rather before I knew I wanted it. Finally, the rector in the church of which I was a member preached an entire sermon against what he thought was Christian Science. That definitely decided me to investigate it. I took my two children out of the Sunday school, and we three attended a Christian Science church the following Sunday, an Easter Sunday. On account of the harrowing Sunday I had been spending in my former church, emphatically denying to myself that I was a poor miserable sinner, while the rest of the congregation were earnestly declaring it, that Easter Sunday stands out as a beacon light. The dignified simplicity of the service gave me new hope, and I knew I was started on a journey I had not known of before.
Mrs. Eddy tells us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 296), "Either here or hereafter, suffering or Science must destroy all illusions regarding life and mind, and regenerate material sense and self." My way at first was though suffering, and it took several years for me to see my most flagrant faults and to begin to be regenerated. During that time a beloved daughter passed on, and the experience taught me valuable lessons. One was to know that our children are not personal possessions; that they belong to God, and are only in our keeping to love and care for until it is time to "loose" them and let them go into whatever experiences will most contribute to their growth and advancement.
While there have been few physical difficulties to meet and master in our family, I am grateful for the ones that have come. The healing of a growth on the sole of my daughter's foot induced more earnest study. It taught me in a measure to rely more completely on divine Love; for as soon as I saw that I was impeding her progress and obstructing the work of the faithful practitioner, I turned more earnestly to God for help. The healing took place inside of ten days after that, for the practitioner then had cooperation.
