After some years of physical misery and moments of...
After some years of physical misery and moments of intense pain, I was told by physicians in several towns that only an operation could remove the ulcerated condition from which I was suffering. As our financial condition would not permit such an expensive operation, I did not have much to live for; indeed, if I had not had my little girl to care for, I should have wished for death.
I went to every church searching for Truth for a religion that would give me some peace. My home was unhappy, and I thought that if I could find peace in my home, and something definite about God to teach my little girl, — a religion that was not full of doubts and fears, — even though I could not be healed, I should have accomplished something. I prayed constantly for guidance. I was then living in another state. A friend asked me to read some Christian Science literature. I read it, and wanted more; but neither of us knew where to get it. We read what we had over and over. One day I went to the home of an acquaintance to do some sewing and while I was there the postman came, bringing some copies of the Christian Science Sentinel, which were immediately thrown into the wastebasket. I wanted those Sentinels, and asked for them before I left. I read them and passed them on to my friend.
Later my husband's work took him to a distant town. I followed, and became so ill after the journey that I thought I could never take another step. I sat in the depot and prayed to be led to the place prepared for me there. A newspaper advertisement directed us to an apartment very close to the depot which met our need. The lady there was a Christian Scientist. Within one month after I came into this home I was perfectly healed. So gently did I emerge from the material into the spiritual idea of life that I never knew when the healing actually took place. So again was proved the verse in Isaiah, "Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price."
