Express and Journal

In the Express and Journal recently, reference was made to a new biography of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, by Dr. Lyman P. Powell, an Episcopalian clergyman. The article commences as a review of the book, volunteers a misstatement regarding the method of Christian Science healing, and continues in a flippant vein to try to discount what it calls Dr. Powell's "panegyric" of Mrs. Eddy.

The first objection is directed against the fee charged by Mrs. Eddy for instruction in her metaphysical college; but surely this concerned only those desiring such tuition. Mrs. Eddy, in her own words, "gave fully seven-eighths of her time without remuneration, except the bliss of doing good" (Rudimental Divine Science, p. 14). Further, Christian Science is not, as stated, either "a species of faith cure" or "suggestion." One may, by blind faith or suggestion, believe that two times two equals four or even five, but understanding is necessary to insure conviction that it is four. So, in Christian Science practice the understanding of God as unchangeable Principle or Love, "who healeth all thy diseases," brings conviction, dispels doubt, and ushers in the angel visitant with healing in its wings.
