Expression Overcoming Depression

ONE of the basic teachings of Christian Science is that man is the complete expression of God, and that as God is always expressing Himself, so man is always active. Regardless of what, from the mortal standpoint, may be said about depression, or the slowing down of activity, this fact of true being remains unchanged. Jesus' promise of freedom for all who should continue in his word to the point of knowing or understanding the truth includes freedom from all forms of depression; for this understanding reveals the true man as the harmonious and perfect expression of God.

At a time when business activities seem slow, the word "depression" is apt to be overemployed by many. When tempted to relate and to dwell upon stories of misfortune and failure, let us be as careful as we are when handling sharp-edged tools; for statements of error, if accepted as real, invite these errors or evils into our own consciousness. All evil is mesmeric, and only awaits a mistaken admission of its power to begin to operate as false belief.

It is no more permissible to strengthen a prevailing belief of depression by repeating, as true, what is said about it, than it is to discuss and enlarge upon crime news given in the newspapers. The Christian Scientist should be engaged in constructive thinking and speaking.
