Balancing Accounts

CERTAIN parables of Jesus the Christ clearly indicate the paramount necessity of faithfully guarding the human consciousness, that delusive or erroneous beliefs may not be accepted.

The alert student of Christian Science early learns that this task is essential to spiritual progress. A statement to be found on page 405 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy elucidates the teaching of the master Christian on the subject of overcoming hatred, revenge, and deceit. She writes: "Choke these errors in their early stages, if you would not cherish an army of conspirators against health, happiness, and success. They will deliver you to the judge, the arbiter of truth against error. The judge will deliver you to justice, and the sentence of the moral law will be executed upon mortal mind and body. Both will be manacled until the last farthing is paid,— until you have balanced your account with God."

A student who had reached a place in his experience where much discord seemed to be holding sway pondered this significant statement with great earnestness. The concluding words particularly held his attention, as he was an expert accountant and well knew the value of carefully balanced accounts. Just what was meant, he asked himself, by balancing accounts with God?
