Man's Eternal Existence

In considering the eternal existence of man let us first determine what constitutes man and what, existence. We are more or less familiar with Mrs. Eddy's definition of "man" on page 591 "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and with the passage on page 76 of the same book where she explains that "when advanced to spiritual being and the understanding of God," no longer "will man seem to be corporeal, but he will be an individual consciousness, characterized by the divine Spirit as idea, not matter."

"Consciousness," as defined in part by Webster, is "knowledge of one's own existence." Whence comes true knowledge? From God, the all-knowing Mind. The consciousness, then, which constitutes man, emanates from God; and it is composed of His ideas. Jesus referred to his true selfhood when he said to the Jews, "Before Abraham was, I am." They conceive of little else but materiality, however; and, accordingly, they failed to distinguish between the true or real man and the physical Jesus.

Let us banish the belief that we have two selves, one material and the other spiritual. There is only one real individuality, the one God knows, the one through which He is constantly manifesting or expressing His ideas.
