"Earth has little light or joy for mortals before Life is...
"Earth has little light or joy for mortals before Life is spiritually learned," Mrs. Eddy says on page 548 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Religion had meant little to me since childhood, because I could not love or understand that which I thought we should fear, as I understood God to be a power that punished. I was happy to learn that God is Love and an ever present help.
When Christian Science was first presented to me over nine years ago through friends, I was very melancholy and in a bad condition physically from the effects of an operation performed a year or so before. I was also very deaf, a handicap I had had since youth. After studying Science and Health in conjunction with the Bible for a short time, I gained in strength and put on weight. Constipation was overcome, and I have never taken a purgative since. A happy outlook took the place of a melancholy one, and I could hear sounds that I hardly knew existed; to-day I do not have trouble hearing anyone. Many other healings have taken place, some with the help of practitioners, some without. Hay fever, influenza, colds, bad falls, and inharmony in immediate surroundings have been healed.
When a dear brother and a son met with a sudden and fatal accident, we all were wonderfully helped. What a consolation it was to me to feel that there is no death! I was the only one of a large family interested in Christian Science, and I met with a great deal of opposition. Many times I have been discouraged, but I clung to the understanding of Truth I had gained and better understanding unfolded. I found that impatience had to be overcome, for it only made my chains of mortal sense tighter. I firmly believe there are no problems, great or small, that Christian Science, when rightly applied, cannot solve.
