I did not come into Christian Science for physical healing...
I did not come into Christian Science for physical healing, as I did not know that this work formed part of the religion, although I was much in need of healing. We moved to California several years ago, and on arriving in San Francisco we purchased a newspaper. In this I saw a notice of a Christian Science lecture to be given the following day. I attended this lecture, and I shall never forget the feeling of happiness that came over me; I had never felt anything like it before. This was my first experience in Christian Science. The same evening I went to a service in one of the Christian Science churches, and decided that I had found what I had been looking for all my life, a religion which explained the Bible and gave me a true concept of God.
The day following the lecture I bought the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I read it all that day and far into the night. I had been reading this book only about two months when I found that I was healed of broken arches, varicose veins, a dislocated hip bone, which had been out of place for twelve years through a fall down a steep hill, bilious attacks, and rheumatism which had troubled me every winter. They all dropped off like old garments.
For the broken arches I had consulted many specialists, tried various kinds of supports, and had several pairs of especially built shoes; but all these things had been of no avail. In fact, a chiropractor, who was treating me for the dislocated hip, on noticing the condition of my feet told me that they would not carry me more than a few years at the most, and then I would have to get about on crutches. To relieve the pressure of the varicose veins I had to wear an elastic stocking continually. While out walking one day I noticed a very light and airy feeling around that leg, and on looking down found that I had forgotten to put on the elastic stocking. I was perplexed for a moment and did not know whether to go back home or continue, but the thought came to me to go on about my business. I have never had any use for the stocking since. After I had been studying Christian Science about a year, a small growth which was on my breast dropped off through the realization of the truth as stated in the textbook (p. 463), "A spiritual ideahas not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive."
