About eight years ago, when Christian Science was first...
About eight years ago, when Christian Science was first mentioned to me, I was in a most miserable state both physically and mentally. Following a nervous breakdown, a physical condition, which had troubled me at intervals for many years and which none of the doctors who attended me seemed able to heal, became very acute. I had months of medical treatment and various remedies were tried but without any result. I was then advised to consult a well-known surgeon and specialist. The specialist ordered an X-ray examination for me, and after a second consultation with him I was told that my condition was very serious. He said I was suffering from osteo-arthritis in a serious form, and that not only did he consider it incurable but that it was dangerous for me even to walk about. The specialist gave me his reasons for what he said, and as the X-ray photographs showed a very distressing physical state it all seemed very conclusive to me. I was in almost constant pain, which never left me night or day, and which at times was very severe, and I asked the specialist if he could suggest anything which would at least give me some relief. He said that the pain was quite inevitable and I must put up with it. I remained in a very weak and helpless state for many months, scarcely able to dress myself and unable to stand without holding on to something.
Several friends suggested Christian Science to me at different times, but I could not see that it would benefit me after all that the medical men had told me. To please a friend I read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, but it did not impress me very much then. After nearly a year had passed and I was no better, a relative persuaded me to try Christian Science. I had no faith in it at all, but asked for treatment, thinking that at least it would not do me any harm. In a very short time I was able to walk across the bedroom without holding on to anything, and I realized that the so-called "inevitable" pain had disappeared. In about six months I was able to resume my ordinary work, and since that time Christian Science has met my every need.
About four years later the physical condition showed itself in a different way, but again I was healed. On another occasion, when I was suddenly seized with intense internal pain, Christian Science treatment healed me instantaneously. It is difficult for me to tell how grateful I am for these healings and how much this Science means to me. It has brought me health instead of suffering and disease, peace and joy where there had been bitterness and resentment, and loving friends, who have helped me many times with kindly words and acts.
