In reply to your correspondent, with reference to what seemed to him a contradiction in a recent lecture, may I say Christian Scientists do not deny that to human sense disease seems real, but they do insist, as your correspondent rightly states, that because God, good, has not created these evils, they are not real, and therefore are to be denied.

In just the same way Christian Scientists admit that, humanly speaking, the world is just now passing through a period of trade depression and consequent unemployment with all its attendant ills; but they do not admit that these conditions—trade depression, slump, unemployment, et cetera—are of God. These conditons, arising from economic causes, are symptoms of disease in the body politic; and the error from which they spring can be destroyed by the truth which Christian Science teaches, in the same way as disease in the human body is destroyed.

Christ Jesus demonstrated in his day the ability of God to provide plenty where lack apparently held sway, by feeding the multitudes and providing wine at the wedding feast—just as he demonstrated in numerous cases, known to us all, God's willingness and ability to heal "all manner of disease." Christian Scientists, therefore, take the stand that every phase of evil, whether it be manifested as sickness, sin, poverty, or unemployment, is the outcome of mortal mind, or "the carnal mind" as Paul expresses it, and does not proceed from God. Jesus said, "Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up;" and we may be very sure that these plants of error's sowing will be rooted up and destroyed as mankind attains to the knowledge of God, and of man's rich heritage as the son of God.
