A professor points out that he has tried for many years...
Sjambok
A professor points out that he has tried for many years "to probe the secrets of Christian Science," and says that "it was almost impossible to get at facts." But Christian Science has no secrets from the world. Any individual can purchase or borrow and read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Most public libraries have the book.
If, however, by "the secrets of Christian Science" the professor means spiritual understanding and how to heal the sick, the sinning, and sorrowful, then I will say that material sense cannot understand these things. Spiritual understanding is gained through Spiritual sense and an earnest desire to know more of God. The Tenets of Christian Science are simple and straightforward, with no hidden meaning. They are to be found on page 497 of our textbook and on pages 15 and 16 of the Church Manual. Christian Science is based on the Bible; it is preeminenly Christian and entirely scientific, and its teaching can be proved by anyone who acquires a spiritual understanding of God.
There are many people living to-day who knew Mrs. Eddy. Some belonged to her household. These people speak of Mrs. Eddy with love and reverence. There are numerous records available of the esteem in which Mrs. Eddy was held by prominent people of integrity and repute. For nineteen years she lived in Concord, New Hampshire, and when she left to take up her residence near Boston, resolutions were passed by the City Council to the effect that they regretted her departure, and greatly appreciated her life and what she had done for the town. When Mrs. Eddy passed on in 1910, many of the leading newspapers of the United States were unstinted in praise of her wonderful life. These tributes fill a book of over one hundred and twenty-five pages.
