When I first heard of Christian Science I was in urgent...
When I first heard of Christian Science I was in urgent need of physical healing. I was suffering from an internal weakness resulting from mental and physical strain. Massage, rest cure, and a plaster jacket had not cured the trouble; and finally, after I had consulted various surgeons, my local doctor placed me under the care of a surgeon-specialist, who at once ordered a severe operation. This over, I looked forward with great eagerness to a speedy recovery, but weeks passed by and I showed no sign of regaining health and strength. My doctor was very much concerned, and after obtaining another doctor's opinion he decided I should risk another operation, although there were doubts as to its outcome. However, having suffered so much I was determined that nothing should persuade me to repeat the experience, and I earnestly prayed to God for guidance. It came immediately in the shape of copies of the Christian Science Sentinel, which were handed to me by one who was not a Christian Scientist, but who assured me that the healings recorded therein were authentic.
Shortly after this a young student of Christian Science lent me a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and soon afterwards I had absent treatment from a Christian Science practitioner. By means of these I was greatly helped, and was able to avoid the second operation which had been pronounced necessary. I subsequently made steady progress without further help from the practitioner by reading the Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly each day, and also by dwelling in the promises of the ninety-first Psalm.
During the latter part of the great war I married and went to join my husband, who was stationed in Scotland. About this time, in spite of his thoughtful care, the old weaknesses appeared. There was a Christian Science church in the vicinity and I was able to obtain present treatment from a practitioner. I shall never forget the joy of being instantly healed of an acute internal inflammation and also of eye weakness.
