I was brought up by Christian parents and joined an orthodox church when but a child. I had faith in prayer and studied the Bible and learned many passages of Scripture, but could not understand them. I accepted the belief that God created both good and evil, that man was created good but fell and became wicked, and because of that fall had to suffer and die.

I was never thought to be healthy, and fears were entertained that I might not grow to womanhood. I married when young and had a son. When our son was a baby my husband passed on very suddenly. This was a great shock to my faith; and when I was told by my pastor that God had taken him for some wise purpose and that I must be reconciled to His will, it was too much for me and I questioned the truth of it and also of God's love for His children.

I used to say that I was never free from a cold; that I would take one in the fall and it would last all winter and another in the spring and it would last all summer. One spring my physician informed me that I had hay fever and must go to the Adirondack Mountains and spend the summer. This I did every season for twenty years. Finally asthma and a weak heart developed, and the last stage was worse than the first.
