An Invitation

On page 207 of "Miscellaneous Writings" our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, extends a loving invitation to students of Christian Science, when she says, "Drink with me the living waters of the spirit of my life-purpose,—to impress humanity with the genuine recognition of practical, operative Christian Science." Such a life-purpose must, therefore, be fundamental to every provision she has made for the guidance of her followers, and it pervades every activity of The Mother Church.

An earnest student of Christian Science will wholeheartedly accept this invitation with a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity presented; but in order best to comply with what this acceptance involves, he will find it enlightening to give careful consideration to the steps our Leader has taken in establishing the varied activities of The Mother Church. He will endeavor to glimpse something of the why and the wherefore of her procedure, in order that he may more adequately join with her in making operative this practical Science of Christianity.

It can be readily conceded that our Leader gained her concept of true government from her vision of divine Principle, and her concept of right procedure from her spiritual insight into the eternal order of the universe. This pattern in the mount which guided her still remains to be perceived and demonstrated by us in our endeavor to carry on the work she established. The field of research thus opened up is unlimited, and it proves that her acts were the outcome of a revelation of the process of Science.
