Chronicle

As reported in your issues of a fortnight ago, a bishop, when preaching at Allerton, made statements in regard to Christian Science that are liable to mislead the public, and I therefore ask space for this letter in order that your readers may not be so misled.

The bishop, as reported, said, "Religion had degenerated, and fantastic types of belief, such as spiritualism, Christian Science, and magical sacramentalism, had gained new vitality. These crudities showed that the changed of outlook due to enlarged knowledge, while they enlightened the wise, only drove the simple and convinced enthusiasts to resuscitate moribund fancies."

That passage is misleading in regard to Christian Science on two points. First, it would appear to suggest that Christian Science has something in common with spiritualism and magical sacramentalism, whereas, in fact, the teachings of Christian Science are entirely opposed to spiritualism, and there is most assuredly nothing in the nature of magical sacramentalism, or, for that matter, any form of magic, in either its teaching or its practice.
