The Lectures
Introductions to Lectures
Boksburg, Transvaal, South Africa (First Church).
Lecturer: William Wallace Porter; introduced by Mrs. Lizzie Aberdeen, who said:—
Jesus said, "I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth." This "Spirit of truth," and Comforter, we believe to be Christian Science. On page 459 of our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, we read, "To mortal sense Christian Science seems abstract, but the process is simple and the results are sure if the Science is understood." In my own experience I have witnessed many proofs of Christian Science healing. Ten years ago headaches, for which I always kept a supply of aspirin, disappeared when I started to read our textbook; and I am very glad to say that I have never tasted any kind of medicine since. A case of shingles, which a doctor said was a bad case, was healed in less than twenty-four hours, with the help of a practitioner. Fits, from which a child suffered for nearly two years, disappeared when it was realized that God could never send, or know of, such a condition, and therefore fits could have no place in the kingdom of heaven. Christian Science teaches us how to strive to claim our birthright, and to understand that as God's children we are free-born; and it is the purpose of these lectures to give us light on this infinite subject.
