Before I came into Christian Science, in 1918, I was...
Before I came into Christian Science, in 1918, I was continually ill. I had undergone four operations, and the doctor had spoken of another. During the first six months that I read the Bible together with "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, my sight was completely healed. I had always had weak sight, and as a girl had worn dark glasses in any bright light. I had used ordinary glasses for some years, and the oculist said I must wear them all my life. I put them away early in 1919, and have never needed them since.
I have had several instantaneous healings. One day I knocked my face on the edge of a door and thought my nose was broken; but the healing came at once. Twice I have been healed while reading the reports of a Christian Science lecture in a newspaper. The first time I was feeling very tired, and the weariness all disappeared while I was reading. The second time was when I had been doing some heavy work to which I was unaccustomed and had severe pain in my chest and shoulders. I was so interested in the lecture that I completely forgot all about the pain. It did not return again, although I had to continue the heavy work for a little while longer. One evening I twisted my neck, and a large swelling appeared. At once I affirmed most emphatically that "accidents are unknown to God" (Science and Health, p. 424), and went on with what I was doing. The swelling disappeared, and that was the end of it. There have been other healings. I like to think of them because they proved that Christian Science never fails, and that it is available at any moment, day or night.
For thirteen years I have not taken a dose of medicine, used a material remedy, or spent a day in bed. Christian Science cured me, and it has kept me well all this time. I was a medical nurse, but now hope to give my whole time to Christian Science work, and to become more useful to others.
