Overcoming Error's Claims
All who understand the teachings of Christian Science are given the power to reject the fallacies, the errors, with which a mortal or material sense of existence seems to be beset, errors apparently numerous and varied. Before coming to Christian Science one may have had little or no knowledge of the Principle of real being by which to differentiate between good and evil. Evil probably was as real to him as good; and appearing real to him, he had difficulty in seeing how it could be overcome or destroyed. Indeed, so accustomed was he to seeing evil dominate in the lives of men that he may have been greatly surprised to learn that there is a solution to the problem, that there is a scientific way to overcome evil; and not only to overcome it, but to annul its effects.
Among the first things the student of Christian Science discovers is that there are not two real powers, good and evil. he soon learns that only one real power exists, namely, God, good. How does Christian Science enable him to reach this conclusion? Christian Science teaches that God is infinite good, and from this premise it correctly draws the conclusion that there cannot possibly be a power in existence the opposite in nature to good, and that therefore good alone is real. Further, this Science teaches that God is infinite Mind, and that therefore there is only one real intelligence. And with these truths, namely, that there exists only one real intelligence and that good alone is real, the Christian Scientist finds himself equipped to meet scientifically, and to master, the illusions, the errors, of mortal sense. Mrs. Eddy writes on page 216 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "The understanding that the Ego is Mind, and that there is but one Mind or intelligence, begins at once to destroy the errors of mortal sense and to supply the truth of immortal sense."
Error appears to take many a form. Sometimes it is sin; sometimes, disease; sometimes, fear, grief, or lack. How often these weigh heavily on men, taking the happiness out of their lives! The remedy is the truth as Christian Science reveals it. Thought should be turned Godward. The great facts of Spirit as Christian Science makes them known should be understood; and as they are understood and thought becomes spiritualized, the errors of material sense will be seen as nothing, and so be overcome.
