About ten years ago a copy of a lecture on Christian Science...
About ten years ago a copy of a lecture on Christian Science was given me to read by another member of my family, who had recently become interested in its teachings. As I read the lecture, two statements especially compelled my attention. The first was the lecturer's declaration that there can be only one truth about anything; hence there can be only one truth about God and man, despite the numerous beliefs held concerning them. The second was the quotation of Jesus' statement, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." As I pondered these declarations in the light of the lecturer's accompanying explanation of the mental nature of sickness and sin, it suddenly dawned upon me how Jesus had accomplished his healing work. I saw, in some degree, the unreality of the so-called physical and moral discords which were presented to him for healing. This gleam of Truth in my consciousness gradually expanded until I was able to comprehend more of the divine Principle which underlay Jesus' healing work, and which prompted his remarkable teachings. These teachings of the Master, in the clear spiritual light shed upon them by Christian Science, filled my thought.
As I later read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, for the first time, and pondered its logical, consistent statements concerning the one true God and the one true man in His image and likeness, I was healed of three habits which had been with me for several years, namely, smoking, drinking, and profanity. The healing of these habits simply through reading the textbook, I saw as a natural, spontaneous demonstration of the power of Truth, because the healing took place without any conscious effort on my part to be healed. The desire to indulge in these habits completely disappeared; thus they were destroyed. The type of healing here involved was also early and convincing evidence to me that what is termed human will-power has neither place nor part in Christian Science healing.
Since that time I have enjoyed better physical health than I had ever known before. Sicknesses that have since presented themselves from time to time have generally been quickly met through the application of Christian Science. Our little boy of nine has enjoyed excellent health since birth, and complete freedom from the dosing and medication which so many children seem forced to experience in their early years.
