It is about eight years since I began reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Until then I had not understood the Bible very well; it was like a legend to me. However, I had the idea that there must exist a great law governing the universe; therefore, I sought this law successively in different philosophies and in spiritualism. But I remained skeptical and disturbed until the light was brought to me by the Christian Science textbook. The practical application of its teachings was realized slowly, and it was not without faltering that I gained the understanding that God is All-power.

It was on the eve of a serious sickness that I was divinely illumined, for in reading a Psalm I realized from that moment God had become All to me. Soon afterwards I was attacked with inflammation of the brain accompanied by attacks of albuminoidal trouble. As my family did not share my interest in Christian Science a physician was summoned, and I was put under a diet; but in spite of that, in my waking moments I always managed to maintain my thought in Truth. I was helped in this by some Christian Science friends, to whom I am sincerely grateful. My family was very anxious; but I remained calm, knowing that there is no fear in Love. At the end of two months I was perfectly healed, and I am inexpressibly grateful for this healing.

Some time afterwards I became aware that an irresistible sleepiness took possession of me each time I wished to be alert or to make an intellectual effort. Some remarks made in a testimony caused me to realize that I was allowing my thought to go to sleep. From that time I worked and understood that reward is inseparable from right activity. Everything again became normal, and it was with a heart overflowing with deep gratitude that I could then listen without exhaustion to the Sunday and Wednesday services.
