Having seen in your issue of June 18 the article captioned "The Precious Blood" and bearing the subheading "The Scriptures vs. Mrs. Eddy," I would appreciate the privilege of placing before your readers a statement of Christian Science teaching concerning the atonement, a subject alluded to by your contributor.
Our critic intimated that in regard to the atonement Christian Science is opposed to the Scriptures, and remarked that it therefore becomes necessary for one to choose between the latter and certain teachings set forth in Mrs. Eddy's writings. But it is not true that Christian Science is in any respect opposed to the Bible, because the Word of God bases the entire structure of Christian Science. There is, however, unquestionable necessity for choosing between Mrs. Eddy's spiritual interpretation of Scripture and all material interpretations advanced by others. With those who hold to other concepts, Christian Scientists have no quarrel, since they agree that all alike should be privileged to interpret the Scriptures for themselves.
The passage from page 25 of Mrs. Eddy's textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," was correctly quoted by the writer for your columns, but he selected only a single sentence and thus disregarded its association with the context in which Mrs. Eddy placed it. And so your readers were given quite a different sense of its import from what would be gained by considering the entire paragraph, which reads as follows: "The spiritual essence of blood is sacrifice. The efficacy of Jesus' spiritual offering is infinitely greater than can be expressed by our sense of human blood. The material blood of Jesus was no more efficacious to cleanse from sin when it was shed upon 'the accursed tree,' than when it was flowing in his veins as he went daily about his Father's business. His true flesh and blood were his Life; and they truly eat his flesh and drink his blood, who partake of that divine Life."
