About three months after beginning the study of Christian Science, I found myself in a predicament where it became necessary for me to choose whom I would serve. I had used hair dye, and awakened next morning to discover that the left side of my face was badly swollen, the eye being closed. I read the Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly, but by ten o'clock the swelling was so much worse that it was plain to me that something must be done. My father had been a physician, and I was so filled with beliefs of poisons and their various effects, and was such a new student of Christian Science, that I was not willing to trust to the help of a practitioner. So I called a physician.

When the physician saw my face he expressed great fear; and though I faithfully read our Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I continued to apply the doctor's remedies. Another twenty-four hours passed and my face and neck had anything but a human appearance. During the physician's morning call I saw that he was thoroughly frightened and unable to find an antidote. By now I was so much worse that I lost faith in my doctor and in material remedies, and said, "Here is where I turn to God and Christian Science." So I called a practitioner; and in less than one hour after her treatment the swelling began to go down, and by evening my face was nearly normal.

But the following morning I found the right side of my face in the same condition that the left had been. Filled with dismay and with a trembling heart, I telephoned the practitioner, saying, "Oh, I don't know what to do!" Her answer came back, "Do just what you want to do." I had learned something of God as Mind, and after a moment's reflection I said, "I am going to trust in Christian Science." The practitioner very lovingly took up the work for me, and in less than an hour I was noticeably better, and by evening my face, neck, and eye were normal and I was able to give this testimony on the same day at the Wednesday evening meeting. It was some time before I recognized how much I had escaped and the beautiful healing I had received.
