Will you kindly correct an erroneous statement made...

Missouri Baptist Bulletin

Will you kindly correct an erroneous statement made about Christian Science in the article "The Cross of Christ," which appeared in your March issue? The statement is as follows: "I challenge the right of Christian Science to call itself 'Christian,' when it ignores the cross of Jesus Christ, and says that he did not suffer, or that his suffering was a 'mortal error' in which he had fallen."

Far from ignoring the cross of our Saviour, Christian Science lays much stress on its sublime significance. The world's hatred of Truth was a far heavier cross for Jesus to bear than that on which he was placed; and Christian Science teaches that Christians should strive to emulate Christ Jesus in his purity and ineffable love, thus doing their part fully in carrying on his work of world redemption.

Christian Science does not say that Jesus did not suffer, nor does it intimate that he had fallen into mortal error. It declares that the sins of the world caused the suffering and crucifixion of the world's highest exponent of Truth, and it also asserts that the real, spiritual selfhood of the Saviour was at all times above and beyond human suffering. Far from falling into mortal error, Jesus, from the time of his appearance on earth, rose continually higher in the understanding of his spiritual selfhood, until he finally ascended entirely above all mortal comprehension.
