Christian Science came to me in answer to prayer when...

Christian Science came to me in answer to prayer when in great need. I was wandering wearily in the wilderness with scarcely a hope, having been absent from my vocation for three months because of a nervous breakdown. I had stopped taking medicine as I had lost all faith in it; then I tried fresh air, exercise, cold baths, and so forth, which seemed to arouse me a little, but I soon lost faith in these also.

Never shall I forget my first reading of the chapter on Prayer in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. It was as though some wide gate had opened and I was admitted into a new realm of thought. It wrought a quick and positive mental change which soon began to manifest itself physically, so that the loved ones in my home and my friends began to remark at the visible change. The physical effect of the wrong thinking did not, however, disappear until I had constantly and consistently studied and applied the rules of this wonderful textbook. I became filled with a joyous conviction that at last I had found the one right way out of my difficulties. I returned to work assured that a new pathway lay before me. This proved to be literally true, for very soon the understanding I had gained was put to a severe test. Like Abraham, I was called upon to leave my country, kindred, and home and go into a strange country. I knew that this call was coming from the same power which had wrought such a miraculous change in my experience, so resolved at all costs to obey. No sooner had the intention been voiced than error began to wage a tremendous battle to stop what had by this time made itself known to me as God's purpose. I shall never cease to be grateful for the strong foundation of real faith in God which was laid during the six months prior to my leaving England.

Many trials and tests have been made upon my understanding during the eight years of journeying in this new country, but the "priceless sense of the dear Father's loving-kindness" (Science and Health, p. 366) has never for a moment failed me. At the end of seven years I began to feel a call to return to my home. After much careful and prayerful thinking I felt it was right for me to do so. My husband having decided to take the trip with me, we were filled with an indescribable joy at the prospect of meeting loved ones again, and the God-given opportunity of sharing with them the rich blessings God had graciously bestowed upon us. At this point I received a letter saying a beloved sister had passed on. I shall never cease to be grateful for the loving help extended to me throughout that day by a dear practitioner. The inspiration gained through this experience sustained me throughout the next few months and enabled me to fulfill the purpose of God in leading me back to those loved ones who were in such need. A dear sister also received the truth without question, and has since become an earnest student of the textbook.
