[Written for the Sentinel]

To Know

IT is a very easy thing
To know that Thou art nigh,
When all the land lies smiling
Beneath a tender sky.

It is an easy thing to know
God's child can do no wrong,
When in my heart is happiness
And on my lips a song.

But when the strom clouds gather,
And darkness hides the day;
When temptation offers solace,
And mortal sense holds sway;

Ah, then, dear God, I need to know
That Thou art always near;
That in Thine ever-presence
There is no pain or fear.

I need so much the more to know,
When of sense arise,
That in Thine everlasting arms
Eternal comfort lies.
