Christian Science is practical, and it is with gratitude that I tell of helpful experiences in making a financial demonstration which spread over a period of twenty-three years. After being healed of chronic physical diseases by Christian Science in 1902, I seemed to be in a desperate condition—no money on hand, no business position, and no income. My debts amounted to about twenty thousand dollars, owing to about thirty creditors, against which there was a home which had cost about seven thousand dollars.

The conviction came to me with much assurance that God who had healed me of disease would also enable me to pay the debts. Bankruptcy proceedings were suggested, but that course never received serious consideration; for I was sure that Christian Science would solve the problem completely. After my first healing I was out of employment for about ten months, but finally I got a position at a much reduced salary. Shortly afterward a complete list of the debts was made out and kept in my private desk. Six months later, although in straitened financial circumstances, I commenced to give, systematically, ten per cent of my earnings to the Christian Science church, mostly to The Mother Church. At the end of the first year my salary was increased seven hundred dollars. There was a family of five persons to support out of the earnings.

The home was finally sold and the value applied to the paying of the large debts. Then I commenced paying off the small debts. Through Christian Science it seemed very clear that if one started to pay his material debts, even by small installments every month, every little paid would help the creditors. So, when the demands came I was enabled to pay five or ten dollars a month, sometimes more, and such payments helped much to wipe out fairly large debts. As I went on, interest on the debts was met, and several thousand dollars were paid to creditors in this way. When asked for payment and there was no available money wherewith to pay, I acknowledged the justice of the demand, and expressed gratitude for the kindness and patience shown me. Only once was a suit at law started, and that was quickly withdrawn when I offered to pay something every month. Every cent in principal and interest of that debt was afterward paid. Rarely were there any hard feelings expressed in letters or otherwise.
