The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

London, England (Ninth Church).

Lecturer: Miss Margaret Murney Glenn; introduced by Brigadier General Pelly, who said:—

People all over the world to-day are filled with wonder and astonishment at the rapid growth of the Christian Science movement, and are asking, What gives to Christian Science the appeal that gains adherents daily in ever increasing numbers? Why is it that Christian Science churches are springing up all over the world, and what is it that keeps these churches full? In order to find the answer let us ask ourselves another question. What was it that, immediately following our Lord's earthly ministry, caused the rapid spread of Christianity throughout the civilized world, in spite of the most severe opposition and cruel persecution? Was it not the everyday practicality of Jesus' teachings? He taught no ritualistic worship; he preached no hope of heavenly estate attainable only after death. He taught the Science of Life, the law of God, in its practical, present application to everyday life, not only reforming the sinner, but healing the sick, feeding the hungry, raising the dead, and overcoming every ill that "flesh is heir to."
