An article in your last issue entitled "Doped by Fantastic Religions"...

Sunday Mercury

An article in your last issue entitled "Doped by Fantastic Religions" calls for correction in so far as, among other things, it would appear to malign the name of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, as well as those who to-day are upholding the teachings and practice of Christian Science.

The writer of the article in question, however, has unwittingly handicapped himself in entertaining the belief that Mrs. Eddy was lacking in education. Those who are in a position to speak with authority on this subject know that Mrs. Eddy was possessed of exceptional qualities; and furthermore, that she was a refined, well-educated woman.

Equally mistaken is the charging of Mrs. Eddy with "sublime contempt for reality," simply because Christian Science disagrees with the critic's views about evil and its effects. This merely discloses ignorance of her teachings. It is plain that our critic would have Christian Scientists stress as "reality" that which needs casting out as evil, namely, the sin, disease, sorrow, and lack—in other words, unreality—from which mortals suffer.
