The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

New York, New York (Eighth Church).

Lecturer: Richard J. Davis; introduced by Carl J. Fricker, who said:—

When for the first time calling upon a Christian Science practitioner for help I was asked to study, among others, the chapter on Prayer, the first chapter to be found in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 1), in the first sentence of which its author, Mary Baker Eddy, makes the following statement: "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love."

This statement made it very clear why my own prayers sent out to God to heal me were not answered. It was because of my lack of a spiritual understanding of Him. The prayers of a kind and consecrated Christian Science practitioner, prayers based upon a scientific understanding of God and His laws, as revealed through the teachings of Christian Science, healed me quickly and permanently of Bright's disease and heart disease, of which the doctors proved and admitted they could not heal me, and the conditions of which they predicted I would succumb to within two or three months. This healing occurred more than fourteen years ago.

The Bible corroborates the statement of Mrs. Eddy in reference to prayer, for we find in the book of Proverbs the following instruction: "My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. ... For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh." As to those promises of the Bible and fruits of obedience to her instructions those of us who have had healings through Christian Science know that God's promises are kept and that healings from sickness and sin, and all that these words imply, take place during and after every Christian Science lecture, and service, and treatment.

Knoxville, Tennessee (First Church).

Lecturer: James G. Rowell; introduced by Mrs. Julia Pearl Steen Garratt, who said:—

I have been a student of Christian Science for nearly twenty-seven years; and through its teachings I have learned to trust God, the great Physician, for healing. I have learned that God's promises are kept; that "He healeth all our diseses," and that "He never leaves us nor forsakes us!" I had always been taught to love God, but when I earnestly took up the study of Christian Science, as taught in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," written by our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, I found Him to be my best Friend—the tender, compassionate, understanding Father-Mother God, whom I could turn to, not only for physical healing, but for every problem, of whatever nature, whether great or small, just as a little child turns to the outstretched arms of his mother, without fear, and with perfect confidence!

It is nearly twenty-seven years since a noted specialist told me that I had creeping paralysis, and there was no hope for me. Then I went to a loving Christian Science practitioner, who gave me Christian Science treatment; and I was healed in seven days, without a symptom of the disease remaining. At this time I was enabled to lay aside glasses that I had worn for twelve years for extreme nearsightedness. These are only a few of the blessings that Christian Science has brought and is bringing to me.

Christian Scientists are deeply grateful for the unselfish life of their Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, who rediscovered for mankind the beautiful healing truth which Christ Jesus lived and demonstrated. Christian Science teaches that God is all-powerful, and that this power is good; that with Him all good is possible, and ever present. This good, dear friends, is for each and every one, for "God is no respecter of persons."

Copenhagen, Denmark (First Church).

Lecturer: Dr. Hendrik Jan de Lange; introduced by Miss Sigrid E. Friis-Hansen, who said:—

We read in Psalms, "His truth shall be thy shield and buckler." Through the understanding which Christian Science gives, we see that this is true. Christian Science illumines the Bible, giving us the spiritual interpretation of the Word of God. Everyone who will study "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, together with the Bible, will see this for himself. I can tell from my own experience that Christian Science has given me back the Bible, which, with the exception of a few chapters, had become mere words to me. Christian Science has made me love it, because through this Science we learn to prove the truth we find in the Word of God, and to take it with us into our daily experiences great or small.

Christian Science has healed me physically, has helped me in many troubles, in financial and other difficulties, and it has been a wonderful protection to me. For many years I have not been away from my daily work on account of illness. It brings joy and peace into our lives, and this great gift of God is for all. We have only to receive it. Paul says in Galatians, "Who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?"

Lake City, Minnesota (Society).

Lecturer: Salem Andrew Hart; introduced by Russell Recksiek, who said:—

The purpose of this lecture is to correct and explain any misapprehension as to the works and writings of Mary Baker Eddy. We, as Christian Scientists, are not only willing but glad to share these pearls with you.

I did not come into Christian Science for physical healing, but I have witnessed and have had many healings, one of them being the overcoming of the smoking habit. The truths learned in the study of Christian Science and in the reading of The Christian Science Monitor have entirely changed my views on the prohibition question. While I never drank to excess, still I indulged in the occasional use of liquor. This, too, has vanished; and what Christian Science has done for me, it will do for anyone.

Melbourne, Australia (First Church).

Lecturer: Hon. William E. Brown; introduced by Mrs. Margaret Sutcliffe, who said:—

We read in the Scriptures, in the First Epistle of John, "God is light, and in him is no darkness at all." The prophet Isaiah tells us that "the whole earth is full of his glory." Christ Jesus came to reveal God's glory, and

"Where'er he went affliction fled,
The sick were healed, the hungry fed."

Christian Science has come to reveal the glory of God, and wherever it goes affliction disappears. Once more the sick are healed and the hungry are fed, in proof of the statement made by Mrs. Eddy on page 473 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "God is everywhere, and nothing apart from Him is present or has power."

When Mary Baker Eddy received the final revelation of divine Science, she wrote her book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and it became the textbook of Christian Science. Through the study of this book together with the Bible I was delivered from semi-invalidism and restored to a normal, useful, happy life; and this can be done for anyone who reads these books with a desire to understand the true nature of God and man's relation to God. These two books, read side by side in Christian Science churches throughout the world, are joined together in the holy work of delivering mortals from ignorance and superstition, from sin, disease, and death; and we may well say of them, "What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder."

Bayard, New Mexico (Society).

Lecturer: Charles V. Winn; introduced by John Trevarrow, who said:—

I did not come into Christian Science for physical healing, but because of a desire to know God aright. In my own case, Christian Science has kept me well for eight years.

Only occasionally have physical ailments interfered with my attending to my daily affairs, and then only for a short time. In each case Christian Science treatment has restored me to health. Financial problems have been solved through realizing that God is the source of infinite supply and that substance is spiritual. Such experiences are common to all Christian Scientists. Naturally, we want our friends and neighbors to know about this ever present, all-powerful divine help.

Toronto, Ontario, Canada (Third Church).

Lecturer: William Duncan Kilpatrick; introduced by John F. Black, who said:—

Paul states, "Your labour is not in vain in the Lord." This was quite true of our beloved Leader, who labored so unselfishly in giving the Science of Christianity for the welfare of all mankind. Mrs. Eddy, who is the Leader of the Christian Science movement, was earnest, faithful, and honest in her seeking, and thus fitted to give to the world this great revelation. As stated in Isaiah, "The glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it."

Many times Mrs. Eddy stood alone in giving forth her message; but as Luke states of Christ Jesus' works, "The power of the Lord was present to heal them." There is irrefutable and convincing evidence of the power of Christian Science to heal. When I began the study of Christian Science I was prejudiced against its Discoverer, but the more I learn of the truth contained in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the greater becomes my gratitude.

Mamaroneck, New York (First Church).

Lecturer: Judge Samuel W. Greene; introduced by John A. Barron, who said:—

Christian Science is a healing religion, reasonable and simple to understand. It is so simple that the children in our Sunday school are able to use their understanding of it to heal themselves and others of discordant conditions. A statement in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 269), gives a basic point in this religion. It is as follows: "Human philosophy has made God manlike. Christian Science makes man Godlike." This fundamental teaching of Christian Science enables us to comprehend the Godlike qualities with which man is endowed—for the Bible says in the book of Genesis: "So God created man in his own image, ... and God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." It is this understanding of God and man's true relation to Him that enables us to heal sickness, overcome inharmonious conditions, and to express health and happiness.

For a period of about fifteen years, I can attest to the efficacy of Christian Science in the healing of influenza, colds, sprained ankle, and innumerable other conditions.

Berlin, Germany (Second Church).

Lecturer: Miss Margaret Murney Glenn, introduced by Miss Margarete Freyer, who said:—

Christian Science, discovered by Mary Baker Eddy, reveals the scientific basis of the works of Christ Jesus, and makes it possible for everyone to apply and demonstrate his teachings. The Psalmist says, "He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions." In the Preface of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. x), Mrs. Eddy says, "The unbiased Christian thought is soonest touched by Truth, and convinced of it."

Fifteen years ago I was privileged to experience this myself. After materia medica had failed to heal me of a kidney disease, a friend called my attention to Christian Science. I bought the textbook and read the chapter entitled "Genesis" first. The light of the truth concerning God and His spiritual creation illumined my consciousness to such an extent that I was not only instantaneously healed of the kidney disease, but also of an eye complaint, because of which doctors had forbidden me to read. Since that time I have been privileged to experience abundantly the truth of the Bible passage, "And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart."
