Signs of the Times

[Dr. Edgar A. Lowther, as quoted in the Chronicle, San Francisco, California]

In the Sermon on the Mount we have the most searching analysis of sin and righteousness ever made. Beneath the external act Jesus stressed the motives of life. A righteousness of obedience to law must be exceeded by a righteousness of the inner life. Christian morality is an inner righteousness that refuses to hate, lust, or hold a grudge, that is free from malice and meets the world with good will and a rational love.
