The Two Concordances

THE Founder of Christianity, Christ Jesus, when accused by the Pharisees of not adhering to the law of Moses and to the prophets, repeatedly justified his standpoint by giving the spiritual interpretation of the Scriptural texts in question. To those limited by the traditions of the elders, this was disconcerting, because such defense revealed, among other things, the thoroughness of Jesus' knowledge of the false practices resulting from rabbinical interpretation of the law.

The use of Scriptural references was a part of Christ Jesus' teaching method, a well-known example of which is recorded in the twenty-fourth chapter of the Gospel according to Luke, where we are told that "beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself." He inaugurated his public ministry by citing the prophecy of Isaiah: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord." And he added, "This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears." History reveals that the fulfillment of this prophetic utterance dated the Christian era.

Without faithful study of the Scriptures, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, could not have given to mankind her revelation of the spiritual import of the Bible, unfolded in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and in her other writ ings. Two Concordances—one to the textbook, a second to her other writings—are priceless gifts to students of Christian Science, gifts for which appreciation grows in the measure that they are utilized by those hungering after righteousness. As listed at the end of the Concordance to the textbook, the Scriptural quotations in Science and Health number between seven and eight hundred; and in the other writings, as listed in the Concordance to these books, there are approximately thirteen hundred Scriptural references. The student may not be sufficiently familiar with this portion of the Concordances. When he examines these Bible references in the light of Mrs. Eddy's revelation, the spiritual truths of Christian Science dawn more clearly in his thought, and not only is he protected from any adulteration of pure metaphysics, but his ability to demonstrate Christian Science in human affairs may thereby be increased.
