As a boy and young man I suffered much from stomach...

As a boy and young man I suffered much from stomach and bowel trouble and headaches, and was very shortsighted. At the end of the world war my health seemed to break down completely. I could assimilate no food to speak of, and a complete stoppage of the bowels took place. No drug seemed effective. A doctor said he had never seen a man so badly starved. It was then that I was gently led to Christian Science. I visited a practitioner, and on that evening threw away all medicines and have never wanted any since. I returned to my regiment, and after nine days had a normal action of the bowels. This healing proved permanent. Shortly afterward I was able to undertake exacting duty under severe weather conditions. After about six months the desire to smoke left me: I had been a persistent smoker. During that summer I contracted shingles while in camp, and as my back was quite neglected it became very sore and I suffered greatly. When I met my wife, she telephoned for help in Christian Science. The pain ceased at once, and in a few days a fresh skin formed on the back and there was no further sign of the disease.

During the winter of 1928 I was attacked by influenza. After being in a high fever for many hours, I asked that a practitioner visit me. She gave me a treatment, and about an hour afterward I fell asleep and awoke without the fever. The next morning I got up and made my own bed. The following morning a strange condition appeared on one arm; the veins were very much swollen and it was difficult to lift the arm. As the condition was worse on the following day I again asked for help, and the healing was complete.

Our home is united in Christian Science; and though we have passed through many difficult experiences, we have been supported and have prospered in a wonderful way. I have never lacked work or a sufficient income. I have been healed of the need for strong glasses and of headaches, and also of much resentment, ill temper, ingratitude, intellectual arrogance, and the desire for stimulants. Our children have been healed of earache and of other ailments. On one occasion when I was playing cricket with our elder boy, then seven, a ball which I drove with great force rose and struck him on the eye. In a moment I had my arms round him, supporting him, and repeatedly declared "the scientific statement of being," as found on page 468 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. In a few minutes he resumed play, although the eye was red and the brow swollen. When his mother returned two hours later there was no sign of the blow, and he had forgotten the incident and said nothing of it.
