Although I had always known of Christian Science, it...
Although I had always known of Christian Science, it was not until I left school that I had the desire to investigate its teachings. I had heard how my mother, at the age of fifteen, was instantaneously healed of rheumatism through Christian Science treatment given by an early student of Mrs. Eddy. For one whole winter her hands were bound in splints to prevent them from becoming crippled. Her ability to walk was affected, and the doctors claimed that her heart was greatly weakened. In one Christian Science treatment she was released from these conditions, and the healing has been permanent. Another member of the family was quickly healed of the morphine habit in its worst stage. I had also heard of the complete and instantaneous healing which raised my grandmother from a so-called deathbed to normal activity and health.
The time came, however, when I longed to know the truth. I knew in my heart that Christian Science was the truth, but I had felt reluctant to begin the study. When this resistance was overcome, Christian Science became the most precious thing in my life. Shortly after taking up this study I was lifted out of inharmonious business conditions into congenial work, which brought remuneration three times the amount that I had received in the former position. I have been healed of the need of wearing glasses. The oculist had told me that serious complications would result if I left them off even for a short time. While this healing was taking place I found that I could read the Bible, Mrs. Eddy's writings, and the Christian Science periodicals without the aid of glasses. I then realized that true sight is spiritual, hence good, and that true vision could cognize only that which is good. With this realization came the desire to see good, and it was then that I received my perfect healing. I have also been healed of skin infection, an ingrowing nail, influenza, and anaemia. The understanding of the truth has healed discordant physical conditions the names of which I do not know, as there was no diagnosis. God has the wisdom and the power to meet all needs. On page 179 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes: "Immortal Mind heals what eye hath not seen; but the spiritual capacity to apprehend thought and to heal by the Truth-power, is won only as man is found, not in self-righteousness, but reflecting the divine nature."
I am grateful that through the study of Christian Science my desires, hence my activities, are being lifted into a higher sense of good. Membership and active work in a branch church have been the means of constant growth and strength to me. I can say with the Psalmist, "Yea, I have a goodly heritage."—(Mrs.) Mary E. Conklin, Belmar, New Jersey.
