Taber Times
In an article in the Times a writer recently made a serious mistake when he associated Christian Science with hypnotism, and stated, "The Christian Science practitioner quietly yet persistently repeats, 'You are well!' thus soothing the patient and leaving the positive suggestion of health where it is bound to take effect."
True Christian Science treatment is indeed effective. The writer of the above-mentioned article, however, has an entirely mistaken concept of it. Christian Science treatment is not suggestive. The Christian Science practitioner bases his work on the fact of the omnipotence and omnipresence of God, the one divine Mind. He realizes the truth that the real man is made in God's image and likeness, spiritual and harmonious. On the basis of this spiritual truth of being he can consistently declare to the patient that he is well. The difference between this spiritually scientific method and hypnotic suggestion should be pain. If one believed that a diseased condition were real and true, he would be untruthful if he denied it from that standpoint. On the other hand, the Christian Scientist, clearly recognizing that man is made in God's image and likeness, is declaring that which is eternally true when he declares that spiritual man is well, even when one appears to be sick. The results prove the value of his scientific method. While this brings calmness and comfort to the patient, it does so by awakening him to the spiritual facts of being.
Christian Science treatment is in accord with the teaching of Christ Jesus, who thus described the true method of realizing and declaring the truth: "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
